关于举办“Understanding the past through palaeogenomicS”学术报告会的通知

题 目: Understanding the past through palaeogenomicS

报告人: Michael Vincent Westbury教授

时 间: 2023年12月17日(星期日)10:00-12:00

地 点: 南校区家畜生物学重点实验室411

报告主要内容

The ability to extract DNA from organisms that have long since passed (ancient DNA), has opened up many new research opportunities. Specifically we are able to investigate genetic changes in real time or even study extinct species. Recently, by combining ancient DNA with genomics, or palaeo genomics, we are now able to gain insights to a level of detail like never before. This talk will focus on some of my work using palaeogenomics and what it has taught us about the evolutionary histories of both extinct and extant species.

报告人简介

Michael Vincent Westbury, Assistant Professor of the Section for Molecular Ecology and Evolution, Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark Originally from New Zealand, Michael Westbury's interest in studying ancient DNA first peaked as an undergraduate student. He moved to the University of Potsdam, Germany to pursue a PhD in understanding the evolutionary relationships of hyena using DNA from extinct and extant species. As assistant professor at the Section for Molecular Ecology and Evolution, Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen,he has been studying using ancient genomic data from various megafauna species and a wide-range of Arctic marine mammals including the narwhal, polar bear, and bowhead whales
